Chad Gillis
is in the process of starting a new flying club in Bristow and requested
the assistance of the Tulsa Glue Dobbers and their War Birds for a static
display and flying show for the spectators, Airport Authority, and the
City Council. It is hoped that
the exposure will help encourage the Airport Authority and the City
Council to allow the placement of a new club on the airport grounds. Mike
Manring,
Doug Bromley
,
Jim Ewers
, Grant Wilson, Tim Schmitt and
Randall Blackwood
displayed their planes in a static display inside one of the Hangers.
Chad
and Randall started off Saturday morning started with
an interview at the local radio station.
Chad
and Randall talked about the Tulsa Glue Dobbers display at the Military
show and the plans for a new RC Flying club in Bristow. Then
the rain came for a couple hours dampening the show only slightly. The
rain subsided about 11:00AM that morning. Andrew
Donahue owner of one of the hangers requested the Glue Dobbers make some
noise (start-up some engines) to break up the lull and wow the crowd.
Jim Ewers
stepped up to the occasion with his DRI Tri-plane. We
thought Jim was just going to run up the engine to make some noise, but
instead Jim said “The heck with it" and took to the air doing
loops, rolls, and spins…and the crowd loved it.
Next
Grant brought out the B-36 with his trusty pilot Tim. The
Flight was flawless, smoke and all…with the exception of a joy riding
C-64 helicopter that decided he wanted the B-36 air space. The
R/C flight line kept moving up and down the runway yielding to the full
scale planes and helicopters that kept coming, going and parking in our
way. Jim and Randall flew
their P-47's together making low strafing runs up and down the runway
making the Full Scale AT-6 pilots jealous. Jim
decided it was time to land as he was getting low on fuel and made a hot
pass and ended up going around for another landing. Chad
spotting for Jim kept saying "stay away from the bar ditch" not
knowing that right at the edge of the runway was a landing light coming in
hot again, Jim put her down right along the far edge of the runway and
shearing off his left wing with a landing light. Randall
is still circling now quite low on fuel and waiting for the carnage to be
removed. Mike, spotting for
Randall keeps saying "Watch out for the lights", "Watch out
for the lights", "Watch out for the lights" Nervous now
watching the lights instead of the plane the P-47 stalls about a foot off
the runway nicking all three wood props on the asphalt. Doug
and Mike decided the better part of valor was not to push their luck. We
had a great time and are looking forward to the next up coming event in
Muskogee
with the Tramps RC Club's Jumbo October 15th.
